Colin’s Hope is an Austin, Texas based water safety and drowning prevention organization and was formed in 2008 after 4 year old Colin Holst fatally drowned in a local life-guarded pool. After learning that drowning is the NUMBER 1 cause of unintentional injury related death for children under 5 and a leading cause for ages 1-14, yet drowning is preventable- Colin’s parents founded the organization. The mission of Colin’s Hope is to provide education, tools and resources to parents/caregivers and children to prevent children from drowning. Our vision is of a world where no child drowns.
Colin’s Hope Water Safety Education Card Program: Each year, we produce, assemble and distribute 75,000 English and Spanish water safety education cards to parents and caregivers throughout Central Texas and beyond. We partner with countless schools, child care centers, Texas DFPS home visits, swim schools and community pools, community groups and businesses to get these out far and wide.
Water Safety with Colin and Friends Curriculum: This evidence based classroom and online water safety curriculum is designed for children ages 3-7 program. The curriculum aligns with many of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and has been proven to increase children’s water safety knowledge. The curriculum is effective, flexible, can stand alone in a dryland setting or be paired with swim lessons. It also includes a parent educational component as we know that we must educate, create and sometimes change the behaviors of both children and caregivers to create a safer water safety culture.
Colin & Friends is a diverse, bilingual board 5 book series that teaches young children and their parents/caregivers life-saving water safety skills and behaviors. Book 1 is now available at https://www.colinshopestore.org/shop
